A Carpenter's Manifesto
I am a self employed fourth generation carpenter. Ever since I was a boy carpentry was not what I dreamt of.
I dreamt of building worlds. Societies where the buildings were beautiful and made homes for people who could prosper. I sat in church with a pencil and paper drawing cruise ships and shoes and mercenary armies. Each of my friends had their own passion projects and would hand me their designs at the end of service.
My occupation became carpentry, much to my surprise, but my passion never changed. the longing in that naive little boy doesn't just remain, it is stronger than ever, clearer than ever, more relevant than ever.
I've come to believe something about the people who build this world: society is asking for a new world to be made, they just don't know who to make the appeal to. It was never going to be the politicians, or the leaders, or anyone with power who has never once held the tools. It was always going to be us. The ones who house nations. The ones who smile at the detail the client will never notice and fix it anyway. The world is shifting fast. Large corporations will keep...corporating. We will be left to pick the scraps that fall from their table. This is a letter about the world I intend to build with you: where the work of our hands is done with intention and reverence, paid like the rare thing it is becoming, and where a builder clears his number in six hours and goes home to the life he's building. We are building a bridge to the world we want to create — and the app is the initial foundation we will build from. Click to learn more.
The old standard was guessing. The new system is Storypole.
